GARMIN NUVI 265WT vs. MIO MOOV 200 AUTO GPS ROAD TEST REVIEW OF GARMIN

Click ‘more info’. At the outset, I’ve no affiliation or interest in Garmin or Mio. Note that after I entered the Garmin traffic map I forgot to switch back to regular map display, which is a more detailed and attractive color display. I also should’ve pressed button for ‘Traffic On Route’ and you would’ve seen language there was ‘no traffic’ on my particular route. Click on my video response to this one which covers the Traffic Reporting function in greater detail. For this video, I had the Garmin screen brightness down to 50% (default)-should’ve had it at 100% but I forgot about it. I’ve had it lower than 50% (default) and the display is just fine, so if using the unit without the charger you can save battery life. Do note that Garmin does NOT recommend use of a screen protector for this GPS. This Garmin Nuvi 265WT comes with FREE Lifetime Traffic Reporting for so long as you have your unit and Garmin subscribes to the service. The Free Traffic and Bluetooth were major selling points for me. However, I still also enjoy my Mio Moov 200 which is considerably less expensive and was my first auto GPS. But the Garmin is definitely more user-friendly/intuitive and the touchpad is definitely better; the Moov 200 commands small fingers or use of a stylus for the touchpad; surprisingly, the Moov is a slightly better navigator when ‘push comes to shove’, IMHO, and it ‘appears’ to lock on satellites faster, But the Garmin matches the Moov and indeed has a Distance to Go (to the

This affordable GPS comes with regional mapping, announces streets by name, offers pedestrian navigation options and calculates a more fuel-efficient route with ecoRoute™. The ultra-thin navigator includes lane assist with junction view, preloaded maps for North America or Europe, pedestrian navigation options, free traffic alerts, hands-free calling and ecoRoute™ to calculate a more fuel-efficient route.

Nice review.. This is a little more updated than the 255W, but I think Imma go with the 255W because I don’t really see any difference. The only difference I see is the blu tooth and some other features, but that’s not really important to me.. I’m mainly about the directions.

@mrpower328 $97.49 at Canadian Tire if you live in Canada…

@mrpower328 CR rates the 765T higher than the 265WT. After comparing price, and the importance to you of Free Lifetime Traffic (if still available with the 265WT) vs. whether you get it with the 765T (don’t know, but I do know it is traffic-capable-but you may have to pay a monthly fee), you can then make your decision. Since Amazon has the 265WT for more than $100 less than what I paid for mine in 5/09, I don’t see how you can go wrong with the 265WT if it still has the Free Traffic.

@jojoboy88 Yeah, I find the Garmin superior. I still have and use the unit as my only auto GPS. This May, it will be two years that I’ve had it. I haven’t bothered to upgrade the maps.

@mrpower328 The menu permits you to select a male or female voice.

Reply

brentfoto May 22, 2011 at 10:11 am

@drunkenp0t Make sure you have the program set for a voice ‘with a name’, like ‘Robert’ or ‘Katherine’, whatever. If the voice doesn’t have a NAME, it will just tell you to turn but will not say ‘turn at Elm Street’. Also, the unit only informs you of the street YOU ARE ON when you don’t have it going to a destination.

mrpower328 May 22, 2011 at 10:25 am

What happened to the voice. I like the female voice better

u would think by now Garmin would implement the “smooth higher frame rate scrolling” in all their newer units but no. Some of their earlier unit has smoother scrolling.

We purchased a Nuvi 1300 and are very happy. We are using OSM maps. My question is what the does the white rotating arrow on the lower left side represent in ‘track up’ view mode? Is it a compass pointing north? I have been searching the Internet and have not found an answer. Thank you. :)

CrowdPleeza May 22, 2011 at 4:06 pm

How often does the 1300 update it’s info? I’ve noticed that for streets that were renamed about 3 years ago the 1300 still gives the names of the old streets. Also in the Point Of Interest section when I look for some resturants that opened about 2 or 3 years ago the POI doesn’t have them listed. So when should I expect for these things to be updated? Is there a feature that will look for updated street names and businesses?

@DJTEVAdotCOM most of those Garmins’ have a security feature that you need a password to operate, and you need to be at your home to unlock it.

The 1300 does not show the speed limit in the US as you indicate at the end. Works in Europe though. Garmin makes you pay an extra $50+ to get this feature on other units in the US. The 1390 does show it. HUGE ripoff in my opinion. Moneygrubbers!

tboy221 May 22, 2011 at 8:35 pm

@IITheVII i have the 255w its a nice model i liked it but it doesnt come with the traffic. you should get the 255WT for traffic or buy a traffic cable for the 255W. i now have the 1390t which came with the traffic cable and compatible with a new feature called ecoroute HD which is a device that connects to the cars computer which sends information to the GPS device on the performance of your car to include error codes if your car has the check engine light. youtube search ecoroute HD to see it

do u really want to hide your gps everytime ur in and out the car? The best way is to mount it under dashboard and tint your windows dark. Sorry, i live in vegas and it gets hot …so dark tint is allow in the front seats.

Reply

iridethelines2nd May 22, 2011 at 9:44 pm

@DJTEVAdotCOM thats why you take it off and hide it in your glove box…
its not like having a dash mount will prevent your gps from being seen.

Can you guys in the U.S get the 1340T?
It’s basically inbetween the 1300 and 1390T in terms of features. It has park assist and traffic subscriptions but it doesn’t have the bluetooth feature. However, it’s quite a bit cheaper than the 1390T, so if you don’t need bluetooth it’s the one to get.

In the UK the 1340T is £115 and the 1390T is £150; the 1390T isn’t worth the extra just for the bluetooth IMO.

My wife researched Navsats based essentially on a magazine in Australia called ‘Choice’magazine which test drives various products. She eventually chose the Garmin 1300 which I started to play with and fell in love with. I went out and bought the 1390t after receiving a traffic infringement notice. I didn’t know my speedo was so far out until I tested it with my navigator. I also liked the mount as compared to the other systems I checked out.

I jus purchased the Garmin Nuvi 1300 and for some reason i’m not able to turn off the Gps Simulator , Whenever i go into tools and choose to turn it off, it just stays on. So when i actually try to use my Garmin while on te road, it says “Gps is off” The map doesnt show my exact location, on the main screen on the top left corner, its a red X in the middle of the gps signal . Also if i let it sit for a few secs it goes into demo mode. Anyone know how to fix this problem? contact me please.

$100 GPS are good as stand alone….but if u like me that wants bluetooth, mp3 player, voice activated menu, and audio out to your car stereo it worth spending the extra $100. Garmin nuvi 885t has all these features for $200-$300 where 1 year ago it was $500-$800.
