has been designed to float and its ruggedly constructed casing will actually glow in the dark to assist its retrieval from the water. It has also been designed to be submersible in fresh or salt water to a depth of 3 feet for 30 minutes, complying with JIS-7 and IPX7 standards. The HX851 has 6 Watts of transmit power and settings of 1W, 2.5W and 5W can also be selected to maximize the transmit distance and to conserve battery life. The HX851 has excellent loud-speaker audio and can be heard above engine and oceanic noise and this is achieved with 700mW of power supplied to the internal speaker. The HX851 VHF GPS marine radio has a built in 12 channel GPS receiver that enables the user to transmit a DSC distress message, report a position or to send calls with attached coordinates. The device now also has some very useful navigation functions that include the facility to enter and store waypoints (up to 200 waypoints can be stored). Using the device mariners are now able to navigate to a waypoint or to a DSC position request that has been sent to the HX851. The DSC function (Digital Selective Calling) includes distress, all ship urgency and safety, group, individual, position request and position report calls. As you would expect with a device of this quality 10 NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) US, Canadian and International weather channels are pre-programmed into the HX851 and these are easily selectable using the dedicated WX key. The device can also be set to monitor WX channels and emit an audible signal to alert the user of impending bad weather.

The device has an advanced full dot matrix LCD display that displays a crisp clear image. The display shows channel names, Radio/Position, Radio/SOG/COG, waypoint navigation, compass displays and volume and squelch levels (graphically) in a simple and readable format. A neat function is the preset key that enables the user to pre-programme up to ten marine VHF or NOAA weather channels. The HX851 actually comes supplied with named channels (16-distress, 22 A-USCG and 71 pleasure) but these may be re-named by the user to suit individual needs. The device can be setup to scan many different channels through its dual/tri-watch functions. If the HX851 is connected to an NMEA device GPS data becomes available to the unit. The HX851 comes supplied with AC and DC adaptors and a desktop charging craddle. The supplied Lithium-ion battery has a battery life of  ?? hrs (in normal use).
